Kiawah is a private gated community. Our home, 205 Needlerush, is set on a quiet circle and over looks both a small pond and the 8th fairway of Cougar Point golf course. Our home has three bedrooms, as well as a furnished loft. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, double vanity and its own bathroom. The second bedroom has a full-size bed with a big closet and a TV. The third bedroom has two twin beds, with a TV and one of two internet connections in the house. These two bedrooms share a bathroom in the hallway. The loft has a full-size bed, dresser and a TV.
There is a deck and a small back lawn; both are perfect for reading a book or watching the many birds that live around the pond. We also have several generations of small baby alligators who live in the pond. If you go out the sliding-glass door quietly, you will doubtless see several of them basking in the sun on the lawn by the edge of the pond.
Linger over breakfast in the sunny nook in the gourmet kitchen. Serve an elegant dinner on the antique dining room table. Enjoy a good movie in the spacious and comfortable living room. Grill some local-caught shrimp on the gas grill, located in the outside shed, and enjoy your dinner on the furnished deck. There is a second internet connection in the glass desk in the living room, if you need to get a little work done. A washer and dryer are also available.
If you decide to hang out on the deck in the afternoon with a good book, an Osprey may circle the pond looking for a fat fish to snatch up for dinner. Turtles, Carolina Wrens, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Belted Kingfishers, Hooded Mergansers and little green-brown anoles may also stop by to visit. These tiny reptiles turn from brown to bright green and flash their pink neck-flap at you.
The house is a scenic 20-minute stroll from the beach (approx 900 yards), located between the East and West Villages. You will pass many ponds and fairways on the way to the beach and there are some prime bird-watching spots, so bring your camera. If you decide to bike to the beach instead, you can safely leave it at the end of the beach path, or take it down on to the beach for a leisurely ride or a heart-pumping session against the wind.
Just around the corner from our house, on Sea Marsh Drive, is the place where most of the Great Egrets on the island sleep, or roost, for the night. Driving back from dinner, your headlights will pass over the shoreline foliage and light up the sleeping birds. They look like Christmas trees, filled with large white ornaments! It’s worth a stroll down to the pond every day to see the large variety of birds hanging around. Black-crowned Night Herons, Green Herons, Anhinga, and Least Bitterns have been spotted sleeping over too.
